Good but not great

This is the version that does not have a pre amp so make sure you understand this before purchasing. I have a preamp on my Denon receiver but if you can a can afford a dedicated pre amp then you would be better served. Then again a dedicated phone amp can be more expensive than this turntable so you have to consider that.This is very much an introductory turntable it does somethings well, somethings not so well. It's easy as pie to set up all the features are automated so even someone like myself who's not one for tweaking a turntable it's a piece of cake to set up and get running.My issues are with primarily two things. 1. This turntable doesn't do a good job of reproducing bass, the high's and mids come through smooth as silk, I love listening to my jazz albums on this because my selections are not particularly bass dependant. If I put on one of my classic hip hop albums that's were the trouble comes in. The bass really isn't produced well on the low end. I'm not enough of an expert on turntables to fully understand why but I expected better from Marantz.My second issue is with the installed cable. I was not aware it was there when I purchased it. I would have preferred a higher grade cable than this. When dealing with analog signals the quality of the cable can make a subtle difference in terms of performance.I'm not terribly sorry I purchased this since I got it for a really good price but considering the reputation of Marantz I expected better all around performance.

A Thorens In Marantz Clothing

Anyone interested in this turntable should read the reviews of the now discontinued Thorens TD185, which is the same turntable minus the 78RPM speed.The 3 reviews of that model are good. So the Marantz TT42 turntable should not disappoint budget-conscious audiophiles. Although it looks plain, it should give other entry-level audiophile turntables (Pro-Ject and Music Hall come to mind) a run for their money.

Not worth the cost or the brand name.

This is a cheapened-down version of a c. 1998 Dual, missing a few key features.No adjustable counterweight.No anti-skate.You're married to the included cartridge (for the above reasons).I'd probably opt to avoid this one.
