Sounds better than expected...way better!
By G. Ng
I used to be a huge audiophile with my Denon DPL-60 and high end cartridge. Back in the 80's I had no problem spending $1,000 on a turntable set up. I reset up the old Denon recently and it just up and died. To be honest, it didn't sound all that great compared to the new digital formats so when I went to replace it I decided to avoid the high end and just go for something that worked. Well let me tell you, the Music Hall USB-1 exceeded my expectations. It sounds better than then Denon, clearer and crisper, and the pops and clicks for some reason are reduced to minimal levels. Now I don't get that last part either, but records that were pretty terrible sounding on the Denon sound acceptable to great on this Music Hall.A few caveats to audiophiles. First, this is a pretty light player with a surprisingly light platter and the outside looks like lacquered wood but it's plastic. I was a bit skeptical when I received it and picked it up. Afterall, that Denon weighs about 30 pounds so this was a shocker. Setup was easy but there is no auto pickup at the end of the record and the cue level to raise and lower the tonearm is near the back of the arm. That said, the sound quality is excellent. No hum, plenty loud with the built in preamp (which you can switch off), and it's great you can unplug the RCA cable from the back of the unit so you can transport it easily to your computer without having to pull out the Receiver to unplug. No ground wire, but not needed.I highly recommend this turntable.

Solid entry level audiophile turntable
By M. Dixon
This turntable really gave me what I was looking for.Pros:The sound! I'm a poor musician, music listener, and audiophile. Because of this I'm always looking for the best bang for the buck. This turntable (retrofit with my old Grado Silver cartridge) sounds dynamic and smooth; the tonal balance is warm and inviting. I didn't even try the stock cartridge, so I can't comment on how the unit sounds with that component. The built-in preamp. My current receiver doesn't have a phono input, and I bet that if it did it wouldn't have matched the quality of the one they built into this turntable. There isn't a hint of the harshness that's so often the result of cheap electronic circuits.Cons:It's not automatic. It's kind of a pain to manually place and drop the stylus once you've gotten used to automatic turntables, but I'm willing to sacrifice that convenience for the fantastic quality of sound at this price. The USB output tops out at 16 bit 44.1 khz. Vinyl really deserves high definition digital (something like 24 bit, 96 khz) backups. Sure, your ipod won't play them, but there are plenty of people out there who want to rip their virgin vinyl to a good sounding digital format to save the record from wear and tear. CD quality simply isn't good enough, so I've had to rig up a line out solution for vinyl ripping, making the USB output pretty much worthless for my needs.Overall a steal at this price.

It's Deja Vu all over again
By Don Bagley
This turntable reminds me of the old seventies classics. It has a speed strobe with adjustable speed, a p-mount cartridge head for easy cartridge exchange and a an S-shaped tone arm. But, unlike the oldies, it has belt drive for silent running and completely manual operation. It's the best of both worlds, really. Lps sound great with this wonderful budget table. The Audio Technica cartridge is optimized for inexpensive sound with quality. The piano black finish is elegant, even though the plinth is plastic. Good sound, good looks (check out the cool Music Hall badge on top of the dustcover) make this product a steal at $250. And did I mention the built in pre amp? It's good.
